MLB Power Pros Review (WII)

What happens when American baseball goes to Japan? Fun.

by Grant Holzhauer on Wednesday, October 17, 2007

It's not typical for a baseball game to hit store shelves this late into the season, but then again, MLB Power Pros is not typical. Although not as robust as 2K Sports' other baseball game MLB 2K7, Power Pros has the MLB license and it offers up all the teams, players and stadiums. The difference here is primarily in its presentation, which in a classic Japanese baseball game way, displays the players in a diminutive, anime style.

Power Pros has a few different play modes, including the standard exhibition game and full season, as well as a host of other things to occupy players' time. The opening menu is a bit too deceiving at first glance, which makes it look like there are more modes than are actually present, since most of these open up menus to make minute changes. Some of them, like the home run derby are fun for a few moments, but there is little challenge here to keep players from hitting a home run almost every time.

Field mechanics work fairly well and are easy to pick up, even if players don't know much about baseball. The quirkiness of the visuals and the sporadic (and sometimes incorrect) commentary make for more humor than the designers may have intended, and its elements like this that make it more fun playing with someone else.

Yes, it came very late in the season, and it's not nearly as involved as its big league counterpart, but MLB Power Pros has charm to spare. This is a baseball game for gamers tired of the realism and drama and just want to have a little bit of offbeat fun.
