The game's graphics look decent. Although Remix has a more cel-shaded approach that works better than the original Mercury game on PSP, it doesn't exactly take advantage of the PS2 like it should. The impressive liquid animation looks outstanding, especially in the menus; most of the levels show an appealing design as well. However, the backgrounds and smaller details come across as hazy. The music doesn't fare any better, with annoying background tunes and some mild sound effects.
Unfortunately, Mercury lacks the multiplayer option found in the PSP version, instead, forcing players to battle against the artificial intelligence. These party games consist of Race, which pits metallic blobs against each other in a fast-paced checkpoint face-off; Shove, a shuffleboard-esque strategy competition; Rodeo, revolving around getting together blobs for points and Paint, a fun little game where blobs have to paint a portrait better than the opponent. These can be fun against the computer AI, but Ignition should have included a two-player option. The lack of downloadable items, such as new levels and extra colors for the metallic liquid, hurt Mercury's overall longevity as well.
Thankfully, the game retains its liquid assets. Despite the missing multiplayer component and the somewhat straightforward presentation, Mercury Meltdown Remix packs plenty of challenges that players will enjoy for quite some time. Stacked with 188 levels, combined with some creatively inspired items and a sturdy gameplay system, benefits this game greatly. Players thirsting for a challenge should play it.
