It's not uncommon for a table top trading card game to be converted into a videogame. Just about every Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon game can be classified in this category. Konami has a videogame based on the Marvel Trading Card Game set to hit the PC, PSP and DS this holiday season. We took a quick look at the game, and so far things are shaping up to please fans of the table top game and Marvel fans in general.
The traditional card game is a multiplayer experience, but the videogame version needed some form of single player. Konami brought in a Marvel comic book writer to pen a story that fits well into the Marvel universe while still combining all of these superheroes and super villains into a single game. The single player plays through almost like a graphic novel with the cards taking to each other through text bubbles. There will be two stories, one for villains and one for heroes, with the two coming together for a single ending.
When production on the game first started, the development team had over 420 Marvel characters to choose from. The team has crammed over 100 of these characters into the single player story mode. Marvel fans who are worried about how all of these characters fit into a single story have nothing to fear. One example given to us was Spider-Man taking down his own set of villains, then tracking their activities to coincide with something Daredevil may be able to help out with. At that point in time you would then take control of Daredevil and pick up the story from there.
There will also be situational boss battles in the single player mode. You may have five enemies coming at you, but you will only be able to win the fight if you take down the Green Goblin for example. In addition, every battle in the single player mode will earn you new cards and points to use in multiplayer. There are over 100 decks that can be unlocked in the single player mode and used to battle against friends online.
Speaking of online play, the PC and PlayStation Portable versions of the game will be able to partake in cross platform battles. Admittedly, the PC users may have an advantage here with a larger screen and easier to read cards, but the fact that the cross platform play is included is a nice feature. An entire online community is being built around the game with message boards, official tournaments with big prizes going on weekly and user created tournaments. Multiple modes of play will also be featured so players can fight in sealed deck matches to even out the skill level of their opponent.
If you're a fan of the table top Marvel Trading Card Game, the videogame version could be right up your alley. We'll have more on Marvel Trading Card Game, as well as hands-on impressions coming over the next few weeks as Konami prepares for its annual summer BBQ media event.
