Japan: Nintendo Dominates as Sales Rise in '07 (DS)

The Wii and DS combined for more than 10 million units sold in Japan during the last year. Games like Wii Fit, Wii Sports and Mario Party DS stole the show.

According to the latest Famitsu data (via Kotaku), the Japanese video game industry increased slightly during the financial year ended March 31, 2008 and Nintendo clearly led the way. The landscape was completely dominated by the DS, Wii and software for those systems like Wii Fit and Mario Party DS.

Here's how the top five hardware and software charts shake out:

Hardware

Nintendo DS: 6,343,547 units sold in 2007 (22,169,761 cumulative)
Wii: 3,741,946 units in 2007 (5,695,579 cumulative)
PSP: 3,427,971 units in 2007 (8,574,026 cumulative)
PS3: 1,197,418 units in 2007 (2,009,492 cumulative)
Xbox 360: 235,318 units in 2007 (602,558 cumulative)

*Note: The PS2 sales data was strangely omitted but the old Sony console had to have outsold the 360

Software

Wii Fit: 1,762,193 copies sold
Mario Party DS: 1,659,315 copies sold
Wii Sports: 1,616,377 copies sold (2,840,389 cumulative)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 1,554,852 copies sold
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: 1,354,447 copies sold
