Ten Most Violent Games Ever Made (XBOX)

Everyone loves violence... except Congress. We take a look at ten of the most violent games.

by Chris Buffa on Friday, March 11, 2005

Whether some of you want to admit it or not, violence goes with human beings like fish go with water. Since we're privy to advanced intelligence (which has in some ways been our undoing), we're quite a bloody bunch of creatures, so it makes sense that some of our favorite forms of entertainment (like videogames) highlight our love for bashing things in the face, and while some interest groups waste countless hours campaigning against violent videogames, I enjoy every adrenaline-charged minute of wanton destruction, which is why I'm presenting to you ten of the most gruesome videogames ever made. Buy them. Collect them. Trade them with your friends!

10.
Illbleed
Publisher: AIA
Developer: Climax Entertainment
Platform: Dreamcast

Don't get me wrong here. Illbleed for the Sega Dreamcast is beyond awful, but it's bloody as hell. This B-movie horror-inspired camp fest forces you to use your senses to detect traps. Popping light bulbs, poisonous gas, trap doors, scary bogeymen. All horrific stuff, and no matter what scares you, even if it's the most non threatening thing, causes this enormous blood eruption from our poor heroine. I swear that poor girl has more blood in her body than twenty killer whales.

9.
Mortal Kombat series
Publisher: Midway
Developer: Midway
Platform: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear, PSOne, PS2, Saturn, GameCube, Xbox

Midway's MK series is really the genesis of violent gaming as we know it. Sure, there were tons of bloody titles on the market before Sub Zero ripped off Scorpion's head, but aside from Night Trap no other game angered politicians like Mortal Kombat. While not the most sound fighters in the world, the series' fatalities and other assorted moves have forever cemented its legacy, and I'm still not tired of them. From Kano ripping out his opponents' hearts to Scorpion's "GET OVER HERE", the Mortal Kombats (I'm partial to number two) are without question some of the most fun you'll ever have while playing videogames.

8.
Turok 2
Publisher: Acclaim
Developer: Iguana
Platform: N64

Way back in the day (as in 1998), console first person shooters were rather tame affairs. Take Goldeneye for instance, which, instead of showing blood, features large red welts on injured body parts. Thank the videogame gods that Acclaim (R.I.P.) loved to do things to excess. Turok 2 continued the adventures of the tough-as-nails prehistoric warrior, except this time the game engine allowed for some sick @$$ violence. You can blow holes through lizard warriors, snipe off their heads, and shred limbs, and before the bodies melt into the floor you can continue to blast the heck out of them. The game is at times extremely frustrating ('let's make the levels miles long and stick one save point smack dab in the middle'), but the technology (you had to love the N64 Expansion Pack) as well as the over-the-top gore makes this one of the most beloved shooters.
