The only new gameplay involves Sony's motion-sensing SIXAXIS control, where the controller can be moved up and down to apply different hits while running, leading blocks on defense, and pump faking when in the pocket. Sadly here, the SIXAXIS features feel unnatural. Even worse, they don't work all of the time. Sometimes, while pump faking, the player will move back in an attempt to throw off the defense, but a lot of the time he just won't budge, rendering the feature ineffective.
Visually, Madden NFL 07 is no slouch; it's just not what EA was touting as the next-gen of football in that aforementioned commercial. Madden NFL 07 on PlayStation 3 looks extremely similar to the Xbox 360 version, but that's not an insult. Highly detailed graphics display realistic player faces, and uniforms showcase magnificent cloth textures. The animations stand out, especially in tackles that look as bone crunching as they are in real life.
Madden NFL 07's audio further cements the experience. EA Trax continues bringing 36 licensed tunes to the game, with songs from AFI, Keane and Lupe Fiasco. Sound effects do the job, with nothing extremely noteworthy to speak of. The commentary is interesting, as a muffled radio announcer calls the action on the field. While it may sound a little low-tech, the commentary does an impressive job of adding to the game's feel.
On top of the multiple game modes and mini-games, Madden Gamer Level points are tracked throughout the game, and are earned by achieving different benchmarks. More Hall of Fame players are unlocked as more points are gained.
Madden NFL 07 simply delivers a great game of football in a pretty package on the PlayStation 3. The graphics may not blow people away, especially when compared to the already-impressive Xbox 360 version, but the game is still a looker. The classic Madden gameplay is here, and while the SIXAXIS controller does little to improve the experience, Madden NFL 07 stands out as one of the PlayStation 3's best games.
