Lost Odyssey Preview (XB360)

Uncover a thousand year lifespan in Lost Odyssey.

by Steven Wong on Thursday, January 17, 2008

Kaim Argonar is an immortal that has lived for thousands of years and possesses incredible magical abilities, matched only by his prowess in physical combat. The immortal proves his abilities in Lost Odyssey by single-handedly decimating an entire army, but old age catches up with him as an event causes him to lose a big chunk of his memory. A large part of Lost Odyssey involves regaining forgotten memories, which are triggered by certain things Kaim sees or hears. Players can review unlocked memories by resting at an inn, where they can try to piece together the mosaic of Kaim's past.

Kaim's adventures take place in the realm of Uhra, a land in transition on a number of levels. Although Uhra successfully moved past being a monarchy and became a successful republic, there are still those that hope for the prince to take up the throne - an act that would surely incite civil war. However, resources are stretched thin, since the rival nation of Khent threatens the borders with legions of demonic and mechanical armies. At the same time, the people Uhra integrate magical technologies into their daily lives, including fast transportation, but some of those magical machines sometimes have a tendency to break down. That's exactly what happens with the Great Staff, a structure created by Uhra's greatest magician, so the council sends Kaim to investigate the problem. He soon picks up plenty of company on the way to the Grand Staff, including a female immortal named Seth and a man named Jansen who makes up for being mortal by being highly skilled in magic.

Combat works through equipping characters with rings. Afterwards, circles appear on enemies and holding down the trigger button causes a larger ring to appear and shrink to match it. Letting go of the trigger at the right time prompts the character to attack and the amount of damage depends on how well the two rings overlap, ranging from Perfect (High), to Good (Low), to Bad (None). Furthermore, characters can craft new rings and add elemental damage to their attacks by collecting raw materials from the world and assembling them. Players can position the characters into different formations, and frontline combatants have their hit points combined to absorb the brunt of incoming damage, while the back row is left for softer characters like spell casters. Back row characters become increasingly vulnerable to damage when front characters fall, so players will need to carefully manage combat. Immortal characters cannot be killed, but rendered unconscious before getting back up, and almost anything can happen while the most powerful fighters are out of commission. Mortal characters gain new skills by leveling up, but that rule doesn't apply to the immortals. Instead, immortals will need to link themselves to mortal party members to learn new abilities. Linking Kaim with Jansen allows him to pick up the same magical spells and abilities, making immortals the most versatile members of a party.

Players will enjoy gorgeous visuals, grand scenery and some sweeping battle sequences, especially at the opening when Kaim wrecks the Khent army. Characters will also don fantastic armor and gigantic weapons to help cut a path through enemies on the way to the Staff. All this amounts to an epic adventure that should please role-playing fanatics. Adventurers can find the Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360 in February 2008.
