LocoRoco Preview (PSP)

Katamari fans, listen up! Sony has a new PSP title that you should pay close attention to.

While the huge titles such as Madden and Grand Theft Auto continue to sell, we've seen a spark in lesser known titles that's quite refreshing. Namco gave us Katamari Damacy for the PlayStation 2, and its success spawned a sequel on the PS2, as well as a PlayStation Portable title. Now, Sony is jumping on board with a little-known title called LocoRoco for the PSP.

We went into our hands-on time with LocoRoco knowing very little about the title. To say the game is very Japanese would be an understatement. You control these creatures that look like little blobs called the Loco Roco. Now, when we say control, we don't mean using the d-pad or analog nub to move the Loco Roco around the screen. Oh no, that would be too normal and LocoRoco is far from normal.

To control the Loco Roco you have to tilt the PSP screen using the left and right shoulder buttons. As you tilt the screen, the creatures will roll to one side or the other like they were rolling down hill. As you roll around the levels you'll come across flowers and fruit that will add more Loco Roco to your blob. The more Loco Roco you add, the larger your blob will get.

Completing each level sounds pretty simple, you just need to add the minimum number of Loco Roco to your blob by collecting the flowers and fruit. However, this also requires finding all of the flowers and fruit, which can be easier said than done. Each level is basically one huge puzzle that features trampoline-style jumps, speed traps to give you enough momentum to reach some higher point and enemies that will require you to separate into individual Loco Roco instead of one big Loco Roco.

The level we played through was fairly difficult even after we had a grasp on the control scheme. Figuring out the best way to progress through the levels and collect everything you need to complete each level offers a fun but significant challenge. It definitely had a Katamari feel to it, but it's a much different experience than what Katamari fans may be accustomed to.

We spent an afternoon with LocoRoco and we still couldn't complete the demo level. Yes, we suck, but we had fun and that's the important part. When you get your hands on LocoRoco later this year, we'll make fun of you for not being able to complete the levels. Until then, you get to read about how we couldn't do it. We'll have more on LocoRoco at E3, where we'll spend more time not completing levels.
