It appears that Indy has uncovered some gold Lego bricks, as Lego Indiana Jones whipped every other game in June. We go for a ride in LucasArts' mine cart and talk about the game's stellar performance.

The original Lego Star Wars was something of a phenomenon when it came out, with sales that eclipsed that of the official Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith game. It came as no surprise then, that the sequel based on the original Star Wars trilogy was also a hit. Out of Star Wars movies to work on, developer Traveler's Tales turned towards another Lucas property in Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, although many had been hoping for a Lego American Graffiti.

Despite its continuing popularity, this would be a test for the Lego games franchise. After all, the Indiana Jones movies do not have nearly as many iconic characters to play as Star Wars, nor were certain scenes quite as kid friendly. However, we can safely say now that Traveler's Tales has done it again, mixing humor with good gameplay to build yet another appealing Lego concoction.

We talked with Kevin Kurtz, LucasArts Marketing Director, about this new blockheaded Indy.

Didn't even have to outrun a boulder
According to the NPD, Lego Indiana Jones' various SKUs ranked eighth, ninth, tenth and twentieth on the June Top 20 Chart. The game was fifth on the Xbox 360 chart, fourth on the Wii and PS3 charts, second on the DS chart, and first on the PS2 and PSP charts. Overall, Lego Indiana Jones was the top selling title across all platforms, selling over 1.1 million units during the June period.

"We were able to work closely with Lucasfilm, Paramount and their promotional partners to build more buzz for the game around the movie launch excitement."

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures takes the fun and creative construction of LEGO and combines it with the wits, daring and non-stop action from the original cinematic adventures that enthralled audiences everywhere (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade).

Just like Iron Man in the previous month, Lego Indiana Jones benefited from the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The latest film in the Indiana Jones saga had the second largest Memorial Day opening ever and currently stands as the 27th best grossing movie ever, with a global take of nearly $750 million. For all the success by association, Lego Indiana Jones does not feature any scenes or scenarios from the latest Indiana Jones film.

"The movie helped bring Indiana Jones back to an audience that awaited his return for nearly 20 years," said Kurtz. "Additionally, we wanted to bring kids into the adventures that were not even born when the original movies debuted in the '80s. Setting Lego Indy in the timeframe of the original three movies allowed us to celebrate the first three movies while filmgoers experienced his latest adventure in the theaters. Also, we were able to work closely with Lucasfilm, Paramount and their promotional partners to build more buzz for the game around the movie launch excitement."
