After slaughtering hundreds of Helghast with an M82 Assault Rifle, shredding enemy ships with a gun turret and unleashing a barrage of rockets onto anything that moved, we're happy to report that Killzone 2 is the PlayStation 3's premier first person shooter, a glorious and brutally intense ride through hostile territory wrapped in a Hollywood-style presentation. Its single player campaign, however flawed, makes other shooters look tame, while surprisingly deep and addictive multiplayer modes will keep you fragging until you pass out from exhaustion.

You play as Sergeant Sevchenko, an ISA soldier tasked with exterminating the Helghast, creepy and heavily armored soldiers with glowing red eyes. Tired of defending its turf against these evildoers, the ISA launches a counteroffensive on Helghan, the enemy home world. With your computer-controlled buddies at your side, you slowly trudge your way through what seems like an innumerable amount of firefights, blasting enemies with high-powered weapons while dodging tremendous explosions. You'll clear abandoned buildings, make ferocious last stands and step into a mech, all the while expelling countless shell casings and running for cover. Like a rollercoaster, the game gives you room to breathe, but it only serves to preview the impending doom you're about to experience.

Much of this has to do with the exciting gameplay. Not only do Helghast attack en masse, they also employ smart tactics depending on which of the four difficulties you choose. They'll chuck grenades, flank and rush you without a moment's notice. That makes killing them all the more rewarding. Unless you score a headshot (no easy feat), you'll need to pelt your adversaries with countless bullets, and the satisfaction that comes from chipping away at a soldier's armor and listening as his cries fuels the experience.

It also helps that Killzone 2 is without question one of the most stunning games we've seen. Sony did a remarkable job bringing this war to life with realistic looking characters and grand set pieces that make this theater of war a reality. Explosions rock the playfield, dust zips across the screen, sun glare makes it difficult spotting enemies and large objects pulse with electricity. From one amazing scene to another, the intensity remains consistent throughout each stage; a fierce battle aboard a moving train comes to mind. Combine the eye candy with a full orchestral soundtrack and dramatic performances by all of the characters (some more over the top than others), and you have a presentation that'll make Hollywood blush.

Single player, despite Sony's achievements, suffers from some flaws that killed our euphoria. First, and without spoiling anything, the game ends on a sour note, thanks to a weak conclusion that made everything we'd gone through kind of pointless. Second, our computer controlled teammates occasionally held us back, especially during the final boss fight, where we plowed through Helghast to revive them, only to see them go down again moments later.

While on the subject of boss fights, Killzone 2 follows the same video game cliches we've come to expect, the ones that force us to temporarily incapacitate a robot in order to blast it or kill waves of soldiers before getting a crack at the leader. They don't mesh with the rest of the game.

Even the characters bother us. We enjoy the stereotypical lines, the "F" this and "F" that, but we failed to attach ourselves to any one person. Without character development, they're just your average grunts.

Finally, Killzone 2 lacks a co-op mode, a surprising omission considering that almost every shooter these days lets you play alongside friends. While not a huge deal, the fact that Sony failed to insert this important feature means that we'll never run through single player again. That became easier to deal with, thankfully, after experiencing multiplayer.

As much as we love the campaign, we'll spend even more time fragging fools online. Killzone 2 comes with a surprisingly deep and robust multiplayer component with the usual assortment of modes: Body Count (deathmatch), Search and Retrieve (capture the flag), Assassination (kill the marked player), Search and Destroy (blow up enemy locations). Yet the ability to achieve up to 12 ranks and unlock six classes in Warzone will keep you entertained for hours. You start with an average soldier and over time (from killing people, completing objectives and winning matches) score points that'll help you evolve your character.

On top of that, you can also train against 15 bots in the Skirmish mode, learn the maps and master the various game types. Playing against the computer doesn't compare to a 32-person match, but the AI employs the same intelligence from the single player game.

We'll always remember Killzone 2 for its superb visuals and adrenaline-fueled battles. It's far from innovative as other games feature superior narratives and better multiplayer modes, but it's still an edge of your seat and bullet riddled extravaganza that begs to be experienced by anyone with a PS3. Of course, if you don't own Sony's console, now's the time.
