Karaoke Revolution Presents American Idol marks the departure of developer Harmonix, with Blitz Games stepping in its place. The game design remains the same, with players following a scrolling sidebar on the bottom of the screen as lyrics and a pitch meter moves along. Meanwhile, gamers watch their virtual partner singing on the top portion of the screen gathering cheers or jeers depending on the quality of their performance. The graphics look very good, although they resemble previous Karaoke Revolution games. On the downside, the judges look strange. Randy and the female judge appear to bite their tongues as they speak. Simon, on the other hand, looks cool and collected.
Fortunately, Karaoke Revolution Presents American Idol packs plenty of replay value. Along with the forty songs and the satisfying Career Mode, players also choose from a variety of classic Karaoke Revolution modes. These modes include the two-player Duet, Knock Out (where players attempt to outperform each other in versus competition), a cooperative Sing Off and the popular KR Challenge mode. Gamers can also hook up an EyeToy and insert themselves into the competition, just in case they get sick of looking at a virtual mock-up.
As players sing their way to riches by earning platinum and diamond records, the game offers unlockable bonus songs, extra items for customization and a variety of American Idol videos. These videos, which range from rousing dramatic performances to ridiculously funny audition sessions, will appeal to American Idol fans,. Even William Hung makes an appearance, belting out "She Bangs".
Karaoke Revolution Presents American Idol would've fared better with a more reasonable judging system and a diversified song list. However, this game will satisfy fans of the show.
