While many genres are flourishing in the current generation of console and PC gaming, the adventure genre has had very few entries. Atari is looking to change that with their upcoming title, Indigo Prophecy for the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. We took a quick run through of a recent build of the game, and you may be surprised by our findings.

Indigo Prophecy is a game that's quite unique in its own right. There are four characters that players will be able to use throughout the game. The decisions you make with each character will determine how the story progresses. One scene had us looking for clues by questioning some people about a murder. We had to ask the right questions to get the answers we were looking for. After hearing the answer to a question, we were given a time limit to choose one of four questions to ask as a follow up. Asking the wrong questions would result in getting information that wasn't very helpful.

However, the game isn't only about asking the right questions. Players will need to keep the characters sane if they wish to make it through the game. There will be several periods throughout the game where your character's mental health will be put to the test. If you push your character too far, they'll crack and the game will be over.

In the build we played, we took on the role of Lucas Kane in the bathroom of a diner. It appears as though Lucas has just killed one of the patrons of the diner. A second window will open to show players that a police officer is in the main area of the diner. Since he could come in at any time, you'll need to move the dead body before you get caught. The pressure of not knowing why you killed this person, and the fact that a cop is right outside, will cause your sanity to be in jeopardy.

How you cover up this murderous crime will determine how the story unfolds. If you leave the body, Lucas will be caught. You can drag the body into a stall to hide it, but there are blood stains that can still be seen, and while you may not be hauled off to jail, you'll have to answer some questions, and your sanity will begin to slip further away. Your best course of action is to grab the mop and clean up the blood stains after you've moved the body out of sight.

As you can see, the choices you make throughout the game will determine how the story unfolds. Atari is looking to give gamers a unique take on the adventure genre with over 20 hours of gameplay and a good amount of replay value due to all of the various paths you can take through the game. We'll have a full review of Indigo Prophecy when it's released in early September.
