Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge Review (GBA)

Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge lets you race, roll and flip your way through volcanoes and dinosaur bones!

Sometimes, you need a good racing game to satisfy your appetite for speed and competition. If you're looking for a game that features nice cars and nifty race tracks, then Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge is probably not what you are looking for. However, if you want a game where you can easily flip your car and barrel-roll with the best of them while driving through crazy loop-the-loops, then you might want to check this Game Boy Advance game out. Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge gives you the opportunity to race through crazy places like Jurassic Jam, complete with dinosaur bones and stunt opportunities aplenty.

Throughout the game, you are instructed by a red-Mohawked guy who gives you goals for each level. His goals might be as straightforward as "Win first place" or as complicated as "Score 400 points in 20 seconds." If you do badly, he expresses his disappointment and sends you back to try again. If you do well, he unlocks new challenges and racetracks, and if you do really well, he even unlocks a new car. Achieving each goal is pretty easy. Races are straightforward. The A button makes the car move, and the directional pad moves it in the proper direction. You rarely have to brake, as hitting walls does not really slow you down too much. For stunt challenges, when you are in the air, the control pad determines what stunts you perform. The different directions help you perform rolls, flips and other assorted tricks, each of which is worth a certain amount of points.

The game's graphics are pretty poor, which is why you should look elsewhere for hot cars and tropical racetracks. Your car looks pretty unimpressive during a race, and if you screw up a trick and land upside-down, there is no visible damage to the car. The only time you really get to see your car is when you select it at the beginning of a race, and even then, the graphic quality is poor. The racing environments are also pretty plain. Forget the colorful Mario Kart-like racetracks. Here you have bland, uninteresting places to race.

The music is guitar-heavy rock, which seems appropriate for the game and especially for your redheaded punky coach. The music is supposed to serve as a means of revving you up and getting you excited for the race, and it does that quite well.

In all, Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge is not the best racing game available for the Game Boy Advance, but provides a solid racing experience for those competitors who prefer a straightforward race and easy stunts.
