District 9, a movie collaboration that once began as a proof of concept for a Halo movie, has been called a "must see" in this week's Entertainment Weekly. Aside from the Halo connection, we like that this sci-fi film was made with no-name actors, a relatively modest $30 million budget and headed up by a 29-year-old director who's best known for creating TV commercials for Nike and Honda. In short, District 9 is about as anti-establishment as they come.
The movie seems to center around a fictionalized version of South African, home to director, Neill Blomkamp. Aliens have landed and rather than embrace them, humans create camps for them while the planet's nations decide what to do with them. A private military force is given reign over the District 9 area and want to find ways to make use of the alien technology but can't. Discovering that alien DNA is required to make the weapons work, one man's DNA get altered so he can use the weapons. Of course, he's now a wanted man.
Given this week's launch of the movie along with a targeted marketing campaign behind it, District 9 should find millions of Halo fans in the cinema crowds on August 14. And in the end, if successful, Blomkamp's Halo movie might have a fighting chance.
