If you thought Guitar Hero was a fad (and one that's ending), you might be right, but that doesn't mean this billion dollar cash cow is going away anytime soon.

Today, Activision says it will be rolling out Guitar Hero 5, DJ Hero and Band Hero in an attempt to offer the "largest variety of music genres" and "new social entertainment experiences." Basically that means keep existing fans happy and attracting new audiences.

DJ Hero will replace the traditional band set up with a new turntable controller that will let players mix hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance music. Band Hero -- a more family friendly version of Guitar Hero -- will be rated E10+ and include Top 40 hits and a more forgiving game experience to new players.

Then, Guitar Hero 5 (yes, it's coming) will slightly tweak the GH formula everyone knows and loves -- namely by giving players the ability to drop in and out of songs, change band members and instruments on the fly. The ability to add players and swtich up instruments mid-song will be a welcome addition to Guitar Hero, but we're not sure if that really makes for a compelling sequel to last year's Guitar Hero: World Tour. What about a downloadable patch that adds that functionality to the old GH games?

In addition to these three new games, Activision will also be releasing Guitar Hero: Van Halen. Add that to a slate of games from the competition, namely The Beatles Rock Band Game, and it looks like we're all going to be mashing those colored buttons for a little bit longer.
