Joystiq.com, GameDaily's blogging partner, is on the prowl at the Leipzig Games Conference in Germany this week and helping to uncover news on the other side of the Atlantic. With their help, here's the Leipzig 2007: Day One News Wrapup.
Go!Explore with PSP GPS technology
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced a GPS unit and UMD combo called Go!Explorer that will plug into the PSP. Offering both in-car and on-foot navigational services, the unit supports 11 languages in seven geographic locations and will offer software updates over the PlayStation Network. Gamers, not homebound waiting for PlayStation Network updates or good games can expect Go!Explore sometime next year for an undisclosed sum.
PSP Getting On Demand Video
Europeans always seem to get the good stuff first. Sony and Sky's on-demand service offering called "Go!" will allow PSP users to download video content via WiFi or via PC connection sometime in Europe next year.
Sony's Buzz! Quiz Coming March 2008
Buzz! Quiz TV, Sony's European Quiz show series, is coming to the PlayStation 3 in March 2008 with Buzz! Quiz TV. Packed with 5,000 questions coving music, movies and TV, sports, knowledge and lifestyle, the initial release will gain special add-on Quiz Packs that will offer up regional-related topics. Players can also create and upload their own questions for public scrutiny.
IM, Voice and Video Chat Coming to PSP
Go!Messenger XMB program for PSP will come to a European firmware update January. The program enables PSPs to use a virtual keyboard to IM and for users with Go!Cam units, they can talk to friends or enemies via video or old-school voice chat.
PlayTV Gives PS3 New TiVo-like Functionality
After months of no comments in regards to video recording on everyone's favorite under TV room warmer, SCEE announced the PlayTV, a dual TV tuner that records European video broadcasts. Once captured, video can be replayed on the PS3, transferred to your PSP or streamed over the Internet to the PSP via Remote Play.
Guitar Hero III Adds Legends You've Never Heard Of
Activision added 11 new international songs to the upcoming release of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. While few U.S.-based music fans might know bands like Heroes Del Silencio, Lacuna Coil, Backyard Babies, the inclusion of more (and seemingly unknown) songs only means an increase in new challenges when Guitar Hero III arrives.
Europe: Rock Band PS2 Confirmed
Making sure Guitar Hero III's power ballad didn't go unanswered, Rock Band will get a PlayStation 2 release (smart considering that PS3 aren't selling there either) featuring Radiohead's Creep, Beastie Boys' Sabotage and seven other tunes including Nine Inch Nails' The Hand that Feeds.
Metroid 3 on Oct. 26; Zelda on Oct 19
Yes, EuroWii machines will get access to two more first party games in a single month. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass arrives on October 19th as Metroid Prime 3: Corruption arrives on October 26th.
New Track & Field Vaults to DS
Konami's 25-year-young series adds a new competitor named International Track & Field. The DS-based game boasts over 20 athletic events, unlockable characters, head-to-head matches via WiFi or local connection. The link above even provides a video filled with grunting.
Metal Gear Solid 4 Creator Vows Simultaneous Release
One major minus about Europe (despite taxes) is that games release there after their Asian and North American counterparts have played through and already asking for a sequel. During a Konami press conference at Leipzig, Hideo Kojima recognized this fact and told attendees that he's fighting for a simultaneous release of Metal Gear Solid 4. No word on whether that's official or the PR person merely fainted due to an unscheduled announcement.
