Guitar Hero III Hands-On (PC)

PC gamers can finally get their taste of rock superstardom.

PC gamers without a console get their chance at rock n' roll superstardom with Guitar Hero III, making its debut for the first time ever on PCs. A system seller for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 since it's initial release, those with a computer and a craving for the virtual stage can now shred something vicious solo or go at it with a friend -- online or in-person -- come Fall 2007.

A carbon copy of the Xbox 360 version, Guitar Hero III for PCs comes included with all of the same content found in its console counterparts. That means over 70 songs, at least 8 venues to play them in and over 10 rockers to play them with -- including the well-spoken Slash of ex-Guns 'n Roses and Velvet Revolver fame.

The biggest addition to Guitar Hero III is in its battle mode. Players can now go head to head -- either with two guitars on the same computer or via the game's online matchmaking -- in a battle of the one-man (or woman) bands, playing the notes of songs more accurately and faster than their opponent to reward them with what amounts to special attacks. These include sadistic tricks like the fret-swapping lefty flip in which the fret board reverses, the "stuck" string where players are unable to hit certain notes until releasing the string by pressing it repeatedly and the whammy bar lock which forces players to hit the whammy bar for an extended period of time before being able to play again.
