The next battle over the hearts and hardware of music game players will begin this fall with the release of Guitar Hero 5. The game, just announced this morning, promises to deliver more of the biggest rock bands and classic rock anthems with a new twist -- players can change the mix of instruments in their band. So if you want one singer and three guitarists, players will be able to create their ultimate band depending on the abilities of their party.

Of course, two new modes called Party Play and RockFest, plan to add more challenge for Guitar Hero pros. With Party Play, players can drop in or out of gameplay (great for those nature calls). RockFest encompasses five new head-to-head modes in one uber competition played at home or online... and it will let you compete with the game's entire set list (no unlocking needed). A redesigned version of the GHMusic Studio and a new innovation called Band Moments, where bands are rewarded for hitting special note streams or playing in a specific way will also give players new heights of achievement.

Music is always at the center of Guitar Hero and with its fifth iteration, Guitar Hero 5's list of 85 tracks includes master tracks including Kings of Leon, The Rolling Stones, The White Stripes, Santana, Vampire Weekend, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Activision teases the GH faithful by promising 25 artists for a wide variety of genres as well.

Guitar Hero 5, due this Fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii, will also be backwards compatible with all the downloadable content from Guitar Hero World Tour.
