Publisher Take-Two Interactive has announced that the latest edition in the popular Grand Theft Auto series,Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, is being developed for the Xbox, along with the PC incarnation previously announced. The game, which is currently in development at Rockstar North, released earlier this year on the PlayStation 2 and is the latest in the highly successful and equally controversial GTA series that has become one of the best selling franchises of all time.

In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas players assume the role Carl Johnson who returns to his hometown of San Andreas five years after his mother was murdered. Upon his arrival, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets. The title will extend the free-form gameplay that made the series so popular while adding new weapons, the ability to train characters and even ride throughout the San Andreas countryside.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is rated "M" for Mature and is expected to ship throughout North America for the PC and Xbox on June 7th, 2005, with the European debut on June 10th. The expected release date for the Xbox is still forthcoming.
