It's not often that mainstream media lauds the efforts of game designers, and even less often that they laud Grand Theft Auto. The annual TIME 100, a list dedicated to honoring the world's most influential people, called out Rockstar's vice presidents, Sam and Dan Houser, for their impact on American cultural history.

Was it a prominent film or book or record that defined how we look back on gang-era Los Angeles? No, it was a video game that uses movies, music and writing to a greater effect. Who better summarized and satirized the drug-dealing Miami of the '80s? Or the New York City of now? The Housers are doing the work of Tom Wolfe, creating tapestries of modern times as detailed as those of Balzac or Dickens.

That's pretty heady stuff considering we usually hear about Grand Theft Auto causing homicides and broken childhoods. Congratulations! Next year we want Ken Levine honored for making Ayn Rand relevant again.
