According to Variety, Sony Computer Entertainment will launch an on-demand high-definition video service for the PS3 in Japan early in 2008. This will allow Japanese PS3 owners to download video content onto their PS3. They will also add pictures along with video content from Sony Pictures Entertainment and other companies sometime after the service is launched.

The first video offerings on the Japanese PS3 VOD service will be car racing videos and a BBC auto documentary, each costing roughly $1.85. Sony is hoping that that and The GT-R Legend Inside Story I will help drum up interest in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The first of a three-part documentary about Nissan's GT-R will be available for free on December 6, with the last two entries releasing after the racing simulator, which is coming out in Japan on December 13.

SCEA has made no announcements about a VOD service here in the U.S.
