Play violent video games as long as we have and you'll see some scary things, including decapitations, dismemberments and plenty of eye gouging. Most of it's in good fun, especially when Nazis, zombies and even Nazi zombies are involved. Some developers, however, encourage us to do things so horrible, that just thinking about them makes us cringe. Naturally, we felt compelled to share these brutal executions with you.

Curbing (Gears of War)

Stepping on someone's fingers and toes is one thing. Happily stomping his or her head into red mush, however, takes things to a whole new level. Look, it was terrifying in American History X, equally unsettling in The Sopranos and nastier in both Gears of War and its sequel. A player goes down, slowly crawls along the ground screaming for help, and along we come, skipping up beside them and driving a boot onto their head. Suffice to say, we'd rather face the guillotine than die from curbing.

Helios' head rip (God of War III)

With violent games, decapitating people comes with the territory. We can't even begin to imagine how many computer-controlled characters have lost their heads as the result of our razor sharp blades. Then there's the head-ripping scene in God of War III, without question one of the most disturbing moments in video games. After incapacitating Helios, Kratos walks over to him and tears off his head, except Helios puts up a fight; surprise, the guy doesn't want to lose it.

Sony makes this especially painful to watch by thrusting both characters in our faces so we can see the looks of pain/fear/OMG on Helios' mug. Meanwhile, we're busy mashing buttons in the hopes of separating this guy's melon from his neck. It's crazy.

Multiple executions (Manhunt)

Manhunt reminds us that when it comes to video game violence, there's such a thing as going too far. Everything about this game's nasty, from the plot (you're a criminal creating snuff porn for an overweight pervert) to the stomach-turning executions that let us jab someone's face with an ice pick, bash his brains in with a baseball bat and suffocate him with a plastic bag, and that barely scratches the surface of the appalling acts we committed. Of course, we can't blame Rockstar for everything, since we enjoyed sneaking around in the dark offing gang members.

Chainsaw (Gears of War)

Gears of War makes another appearance, this time for the blood-splattering chainsaw (you know, in case curbing's not your style). Over the years, we perfected this deadly art, revving our Lancer Assault Rifles and sinking the jagged teeth into the soft flesh of our enemies. Watching them squirm (and literally fall to pieces) always puts a smile on our faces, in addition to making us happy that we're not on the business end of the blade.

Burning zombies (Half-Life 2)

Normally, we have no qualms blowing zombies to smithereens, except when it comes to the creatures in Half-Life 2. Instead of shambling around moaning "brains, more brains", they scream like terrified humans pleading for help. A quick blast to the head puts them out of their misery. Lighting them on fire, though, causes them to cry even louder. Makes us feel like we torched a bunch of innocent people.

Fatalities (Mortal Kombat)

Sure, they look primitive by today's standards, but Mortal Kombat's punishing fatalities still make us shake our heads. Ripping out someone's heart as Kano is always fun, but we also enjoy yanking off people's heads, cutting off their arms and biting them in half (thanks, Liu Kang). Of course, when that stuff isn't enough, we can always knock them into acid, steal their souls and give them a deadly peck on the cheek.
