While Square-Enix has a myriad of different offerings this year, many fans of the popular anime series Full Metal Alchemist are getting just what the doctor ordered - another video game. Full Metal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixir will continue the adventures of Edward and Alfonso, the two brothers who lost body parts in an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy - a cardinal no-no.
In the demo playable at E3, we got to guide Edward and Alfonso through a seemingly abandoned town, but that isn't the case. Sure, the people are gone, but that doesn't mean some bad guys aren't there lying in wait. As you play through this area, you'll get a chance to test out the various learned alchemy, as well as level up your characters. As you achieve higher combos, you'll end up earning bonus points to pour into the various attributes of Edward and Alfonso.
The main complaint with the combat system is that there really isn't too much depth to it at this point. It was extremely simplistic, and you could just repeatedly hit the X button over, over, and over again to beat the enemies. It'd be nice to see the developers put time into really making the battle system more engaging. As it stands now, the game is really underdeveloped and needs some additions to real make it less mindless.
Full Metal Alchemist 2L Curse of the Crimson Elixir isn't really aimed at the hardcore gamer, though, but at the fans of the show. As it stands, those who enjoy watching the adventures of Edward and Alfonso on the anime series can look forward to a decent experience. However, if the developers listen to what's being said about the game, they could make Full Metal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixir a really, really enjoyable game to play.
