E3 2006: Full Auto 2 Hands-On (XB360)

No Oldsmobile shall survive my wrath!

by Robert Workman on Thursday, May 11, 2006

Today, during a stop over at Sega's booth in South Hall, we had a chance to take in some multiplayer mayhem with the forthcoming Full Auto 2: Battlelines, the sequel to the hit Xbox 360 game. PS3 owners will now get a taste of the vehicular carnage that's yet to come, and it's looking pretty nice.

The main mode we checked out was a destruct-o-thon of sorts, where a few cars were dropped into a closed-off area and given the will to survive against an onslaught of rockets, mines, and rammings. I managed to get a high kill count of 16 in my first try, thanks to the survival skills I managed to scrap together from the initial game. The gameplay feels just the same as the first title, and, although it's a bit awkward to convert to the PS3 pad, it still fits right in and lets you get to firing rockets and mines in no time. It doesn't use the "six degrees of freedom" though...not yet anyway.

The graphics look a slight bit smoother, although there was still some slowdown present whenever a huge explosion erupted. But this game isn't due for quite a few more months yet, and it does have some terrific car modeling and lots of destructive effects, so we'll forgive it for now. The multiplayer seemed to work very well, even in this early stage of development, and the way you can stack up kills with a few well-timed jolts and combo firings (two hits with missiles in a row) is nice.

Full Auto 2 explodes on the PS3 early next yaer. Look for a full preview shortly.
