FIFA Soccer 2010 is more than just an update to EA Sports' popular franchise. This year's game comes pumped with over 50 features that should please fans and attract critics who'd rather play Konami's Pro Evo series. Here's what you can expect to see on the pitch:
Player Urgency: Normally, everyone plays at the same pace no matter what, except this year. Your computer teammates now exhibit Player Urgency, so they put more effort into scoring opportunities. Instead of watching a player casually stroll to the net, he'll blow past the defenders and rush the goalkeeper.
Practice Arena: Enjoy a quick game without all the menus. Now you can launch a practice match right after the game boots. You can even adjust the number of players to enjoy an 11-on-11, 5-on-5 or lopsided games.
Customizable Set Pieces: Nothing sucks worse than passing the ball and watching (in horror, of course) a player run in the opposite direction. Avoid the unnecessary frustration by actually drawing everyone's routes and launch set pieces using the d-pad.
A.I. Tweaks: According to EA, computer controlled players will now avoid blocking their teammates' kicks. With that refinement, you'll also see more aggressive goalkeepers.
360 Degree Dribbling: Burn past those pesky defenders with 360 degree dribbling, a first for any soccer game. When someone gets in front of you, bust out some sweet lateral moves and leave him flatfooted.
Superior Manager Mode: Instead of relying on the same old selling points, EA threw over 50 new enhancements into FIFA's franchise mode. As you grow your club from pathetic pack to champion league, you'll experience improved player growth, matches determined by player strengths/weaknesses and other cool things.
It's a bit too early to determine whether all of this stuff enhances the FIFA game, but designing sets and player urgency should make the experience more authentic. Prepare to take on the world when EA launches the game this fall.
