Bethesda Softworks announced four downloadable additions to its popular Xbox 360 and Games for Windows title, Fallout 3. The first, which arrives in December, is the official editor for Fallout 3 called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) and will let Games for Windows users to create and add content to the game.
While Xbox 360 users may start a protest later today in reaction to not getting the G.E.C.K., the first official downloadable content (DLC) called Operation: Anchorage will arrive in January and Bethesda promises more content in The Pitt (February) and Broken Steel (March). The company did not indicate how much the DLC might cost when it arrives.
"We've always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users," said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. "It's fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can't wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K."
The G.E.C.K. enables users to edit any of the data in Fallout 3, from the bleak and nearly treeless landscapes, towns and locations. Players will also be able to write dialog, as well as create characters, weapons, creatures and more.
The biggest announcement has to do with the three new content packs that will deliver new quests, items and content to the award-winning game. Operation: Anchorage lets players take part in one of Fallout's historical battles, the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from Chinese Communists. The Pitt takes player to the bombed out burbs of Pittsburgh, which has since become a haven for raiders and players will be asked to choose a side in order to survive. Finally, Broken Steel enlists players into the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel on a mission to eradicate the Enclave once and for all. This one promises to continue the story beyond the main quest (sorry, we won't spoil it for you).
Since its October release, Fallout 3 has gained the hearts of millions of players and reviewers and the new content in 2009 should continue to add more gameplay value and expand the game's deep legends and lore.
