I'm 32 years old, and as such I have my own sense of adulthood. But even I find myself hunkering back to some kind of juvenile entertainment to get me by. Included in this is the guilty pleasure that is Cartoon Network, offering numerous diversions from the Adult Swim programming block to my personal favorite, Ed, Edd n' Eddy, a hilarious neighborhood based cartoon show that focuses on three Eds trying to con the neighborhood children. Their antics have been spread to video game-land before in a somewhat limited Game Boy Advance game last year, but now Midway is looking to remedy their image by releasing a quality strategy/platforming game for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox later this year. Gravy!
Ed, Edd n' Eddy: The Mis-Edventures puts you in the shoes of the troublesome trio as they work their way around the cul-de-sac, completing side missions to help them towards scoring some precious jawbreakers and some extra coinage from the neighborhood kids. You've got Eddy, the obvious con man who thinks up scams and stirs up trouble; Edd (aka Double D), who brainstorms with lots of ideas and builds inventions to help the schemes come alive; and Ed, a half-with who's good on strength and genuine speed, even if he doesn't know what he's doing half the time. Combine them and you have the elements in place for wacky team-based platforming fun.
We had a chance to check out The Mis-Edventures during a recent Midway press event in Chicago, and the game appears to be shaping up rather nicely. The first thing you'll notice is the developer's dedication to capturing the look of the show, with smooth cel-shaded graphics, genuine animation that emulates the real thing, right down to Ed's ridiculous running style, and some nice level designs. There's even a level that seems to emulate an old TV zombie film, complete with black-and-white appearance and staticky film images. The game looks the part just fine, and Midway has also assured us that the final game will feature the voice talents of the entire cast from the show, right down to the whiny Kanker sisters, so it'll sound like it, too.
Midway and A2M worked hand-in-hand with the show's writers, including director Danny Antonucci, to produce some events that are pure and true to the nature of the series. In each level, the Eds must work together to get through obstacles, be it picking up stunned squirrels and launching them through a bedroom window or shooting platforms to pry them loose with the help of a trusty slingshot, utilized with some innovative first-person aiming. The Eds each have their own separate tools that come in handy, with Eddy relying on stealth, Double D's commitment to his slingshot, and Ed's ridiculously brutal strength. But the game relies a lot on teamwork, and it'll come in handy in a number of spots.
Depending on who's leading the group, they'll do different things. Put Eddy up front and he'll lead a charging brigade that will knock down plenty of objects. Put Double D in the lead and you'll form a human trampoline that will allow the Eds to catapult to new heights. And Ed himself has a purpose, stacking the friends atop one another to form a human totem pole, handy for hiding behind objects for extra sneakiness. The tactics all have their own purposes, and you'll be using them quite often throughout the game.
Ed, Edd n' Eddy: The Mis-Edventures looks like a lot of fun, and not just another scam like the previous video game before it. It really seems to delve into the psyche of the Eds, if one existed, and makes their essence fit across what would otherwise be a typical platforming game. The design seems inspired and the gameplay ideas literally overflow, like brain cells out of Ed's head. Look for the Mis-Edventures to proceed this October, and prep up on your jawbreakers.
