Despite the immense lore and customization that could bring the D&D world to life, Tactics is quite bland. While the texture work in the game is well done, the environments are too dark and dreary to appreciate it. Some levels stand out a bit more than others, especially those that take place outdoors, but here too the playing field just doesn't have a sense of life or vibrancy to it.
This is not helped by the lack of a moving soundtrack. What's present is nice enough, but there is little variety in the music, so players are bound to hear a lot of repeated pieces. The sound effects are pretty minimal, both in their lackluster quality and the fact that due to the slow pace of combat, the sounds are few and far between, thus further reducing the immersion factor.
D&D Tactics supports the most recent rule set (3.5), but the game does absolutely nothing to help fans do anything remotely interesting with it. Even offering wireless multiplayer adds little to the package, as the modes provide only head-to-head battle and no cooperative play. It's not broken, but it's also not very fun, and as such it is hard to recommend it to anyone but the diehard D&D collector.
