In a time when video game publishers race to outdo each other with new technology, Ubisoft and Sumo Digital kick it old school with Driver '76. This well polished but boring Grand Theft Auto clone not only looks several years old, but sports aged concepts, making it a must buy PSP video game...if it were 2001.
Driver takes gamers back to New York City/New Jersey, circa 1976. They play as a sarcastic wheelman, tasked with running all sorts of errands, from using a tow truck to steal cars to following someone without being seen. Much like the Grand Theft Auto games, it takes place in a sandbox environment, allowing players to carjack vehicles and kill pedestrians at will. Raise enough of a ruckus and the police will arrive, pursuing gamers relentlessly.
Although the game emphasizes driving in every level, players may leave their vehicles any time. Furthermore, failing a mission automatically removes people from the game world, forcing them to retry from the beginning; whereas the GTA series let players fail, go back to a starting point or abandon the mission altogether. This design, while not as enjoyable as the GTA set up, helps people focus on the story, which, despite featuring every conceivable stereotype, offers mild amusement.
