Super Smash Bros. Brawl dominated the charts in Japan for February as the Wii outsold the PS3 more than 3:1. The PSP also passed the 8 million units sold mark.

GameDaily BIZ has received the latest Japanese video game sales data from Famitsu Marketing Data Service covering the month of February (technically the period from Jan. 28 to Feb. 24), and while the overall market was down 7.7 percent year-over-year, largely because of a 24.6 percent drop in hardware sales, software sales did increase 8.1 percent.

Leading the charge was none other than Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which racked up sales of more than 1.3 million units in its first month and broke the million mark in its second week – the fastest sales pace yet for a Wii game in Japan. The popular Wii Fit took second place with over 309K units sold, and the game now has over 1.5 million units sold since last December. Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 on PS3 took third place with a respectable 275K units sold. For comparison purposes DMC4 on Xbox 360 sold 51K units.

In terms of hardware, although the market had softened since the holiday season, the Wii still sold through more than 331K units. The DS Lite sold over 230K units and the PSP sold over 223K units. The PS3 meanwhile sold just 89K units, meaning that the Wii outsold the PS3 by more than a 3:1 margin. The aging PS2 also seems to be fading with just 38K units sold. Lastly, the ever struggling Xbox 360 (in Japan that is) sold a mere 14K units for the month.

It should be noted that the PSP's success of late has allowed it to cross the eight million sold milestone during the second week of February in Japan. "...it seems safe to expect the PSP market, which has boosted its sales force since the September 2007 launch of the new slim model, to accelerate its upward momentum even further," commented Famitsu. One of the drivers for the PSP, and in general for March sales, will be Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G. "Given that its predecessor, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (Monster Hunter Freedom 2) (released by Capcom for PSP on February 22, 2007), achieved the system's record-high sales of 1,636,000, 2nd G should stand a good chance of becoming another million seller for the platform," Famitsu stated.
