Derek Jeter Pro Baseball 2005 3D Review (CELL)

Gameloft and Derek Jeter's cell phone game is pretty good!

When it comes to cell phone baseball games, I thought Jamdat was untouchable, but I recently changed my mind after playing Gameloft's Derek Jeter Pro Baseball 2005. Featuring spiffy 3D graphics, fairly simple controls, and incredibly addictive gameplay, it's definitely a must buy if you're a baseball fan who's looking to download a high-end game to your mobile phone.

Like most Gameloft titles, Pro Baseball 2005 features a wonderful presentation. Music blares at the title screen, and during the course of a game the crowd cheers, the umpire screams You're out, among other things, and there's plenty of music to go along with the action on the field. It's at times muted simply because phones don't permit constant streams of noise to be played, but all these things combine to form an immersive experience.

The game's graphics are also very impressive. Yet again, Gameloft has proven why it's among the leaders in next generation cell phone technology. Pro Baseball 2005's 3D graphics are just a hair under PSOne quality and the only thing holding its visuals back is the frame rate, which chugs once and a while. But the player animations are decent, and really, that's one of the most important things the developers had to get right.

However, far more important is the gameplay, and thankfully, Pro Baseball excels in this category. Batting and pitching are lots of fun and feel quite intuitive, and fielding the ball is enjoyable as well. You can even steal and hit the ball the specific location, which makes the game far more sophisticated than other baseball games. Plus, you have the option of playing an Exhibition game, a season of 14, 28, or 56 games as well as playoffs, and you can tinker with three difficulty modes as well as the number of innings you'd like to play.

Derek Jeter Pro Baseball 2005 isn't nearly as sophisticated as the console baseball games, or even MLB 06 for PSP, but it's definitely one of the best games available for the mobile platform, especially because of the eye candy. But past all of the glitter, it's just a really great baseball game and one you should immediately download.
