If there were such a thing as a zombie rights group, they'd be in an outrage over the Dead Rising sequel, where thousands of shuffling zombies serve as target practice for the game's main character Chuck Green, who uses everything from a roulette wheel to an automatic weapon to a bike outfitted with dual chainsaws to rip them apart.
Most of the actual story is still under wraps, but Green, a motocross champion (do they still have those?), finds himself in the middle of Fortune City, a Las Vegas-style landscape complete with casinos, all-you-can-eat buffets and the other trappings of Sin City.
"Chuck doesn't hate zombies," the game's developers say, assuring us that the Dead Rising sequel is more than a zombie killing simulation game, "he's there (in Fortune City) on a mission."
Dead Rising 2 looks like it plays much like the original (the main story will again take place over the course of 72 hours), but with new weapons that will bite zombies back. Those include machine guns (an attempt to give the game a more Western vibe), a paddlesaw (a paddle with chainsaws attached to both sides), a bucket with drills attached, a Moosehead (put it on and bash zombies with the horns) and our new favorite, the chainsaw bike -- a dirt bike with two chainsaws attached to the front. Rev up the chainsaws, hit the accelerator and slice through dense crowds of zombies while your zombie kill score racks up hundreds of points in a matter of seconds.
The game will have over 120 weapons in all and can purportedly support up to 7,000 zombies on screen at the same time (the first Dead Rising had a mere 500). There were hints that you'd be able to custom create your own weapons for the game and no sign that the camera (which the photo journalist protagonist used to shoot pics) from the original game would return. We also learned the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game will have some kind of online multiplayer component.
Dead Rising 2 doesn't have a set release date, but we're looking forward to giving the chainsaw bike a test drive in the next few weeks.
