Condemned 2: Bloodshot Preview (PS3)

FBI agent Ethan Thomas returns to his hobo-bashing ways.

by Eugene Huang on Tuesday, October 09, 2007

When we last saw Ethan Thomas in Condemned: Criminal Origins, he was a rising star in the FBI, working on a number of serial killer cases in fictional Metro City (the city's motto: "Come for the food! Stay for the indescribable inhumanity.") However, a run-in with the mysterious "Serial Killer X" has made him a mere shell of his former self, wandering through the city's dirty underbelly with no other purpose than to battle his haunted past and get hopelessly drunk. Although now destitute (and probably very smelly), Ethan's wandering days end when he receives word that his former partner has gone missing. But before he can embark on his epic quest to seek the truth of his disappearance, he's going to have to start kicking some hobo butt.

Personally, I tend to become slightly wary of the moral fiber of our society when a game comes with a pre-installed mode called "Hobo Fight Club". But to be fair, the hobos you'll be fighting in this game mode are not your average "bindle stick"-carrying, cookin'-sausages-with-secret-hobo-spices variety of hobo. In truth, some of these hobos are fairly diesel and will readily rip you in half just for the promise of a hamburger. That means, in order to survive, you'll have to get acquainted with the game's unique fighting mechanics, which have returned intact to provide you with the same grit and violence from the original game that you've come to love and appreciate. As such, you'll be able to pick up random objects from the background and use them as makeshift melee weapons. However, the objects in these hobo fights will have the feel of the contents of a rummage sale, and will include such bizarre examples of randomness like bowling pins, some dude's prosthetic arm and even the handle/rod from a foosball table with the little foosball players still attached.

Of course, the allure of a secret hobo death arena is far too tantalizing to not be transformed into a multiplayer mode. That's why the series will be embarking on online multiplayer play for the first time through the inclusion of such modes as free-for-all deathmatches and team-based brawls. In addition, online leaderboards will also be implemented into the game so that you may brag to your friends as to the number of hobos you have bested in battle.
