Classic NES Series: Dr. Mario Review (GBA)

The Classic NES Series continues with Nintendo's mascot playing doctor.

After Tetris took the world by storm, other puzzle games emerged that tried to capitalize on its addictive nature, among them Dr. Mario, Nintendo's fantastic virus-beating brain teaser featuring everyone's favorite plumber. It hasn't aged well when compared to today's puzzle games, but Dr. Mario is still a great game, but purchasing it is dependant on whether you own another of Nintendo's best games.

It's not difficult grasping Dr. Mario's concept, but like Tetris, things can get pretty crazy in a hurry, and if you're not skilled enough, those pesky viruses will overwhelm you. There's a pill bottle, and in it are a host of different colored and nasty germs (red, blue, and yellow). At the top right corner of the screen is Mario, and he tosses vitamins into the bottle, and the object is to match four of the same colored vitamins horizontally or vertically, the goal being to attach them to the viruses to make those critters disappear. If you eliminate all of the viruses you'll move onto the next stage, and so on, and so on, and the game gets faster and more complicated as you progress.

In addition to the main game, Dr. Mario also has a multiplayer for up to two. Both players have a bottle, and the first one to kill all of the viruses wins. If you and a buddy want to duke it out, you can connect two GBA's through a link cable or you can play wirelessly via the Game Boy Advance wireless adapter (you'll need one for each GBA).

Dr. Mario's outdated but it's still a great game to have because it's still just as addictive as it was many years ago. It's not the brightest spot in Nintendo's Classic NES Series, but it's a solid purchase, as long as you don't own Wario Ware, since it's included as Dr. Wario.
