Welcome to the world of Catwoman, an everyday woman caught up in a situation of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and reborn into a super feline. Like the movie we find a meek Patience Philips becoming a victim of an evil corporation when she accidentally stumbles into the midst of their secret conspiracy. To keep her silent they do what they know best, by eliminating the threat of it getting out, and that ended up to be the demise of Phillips. Reborn from the grave with the help of some feline friends she awakes with the strength, speed, agility and ultra-keen senses of a cat.
Catwoman starts off looking and feeling like you have a lot of action and excitement ahead of you. The graphical environments and settings are animated beautifully, as well as smooth and eye catching character animation. In the beginning of the game you are thrown in a quick storyline of how your character is born with the abilities she possesses. After that it's right into the action... well, so you would think. The games combat system is very rich with a huge arsenal of acrobatic moves to pulverize your opponents; not to mention Catwoman's trademark leather whip to make those bad guys quiver in fear. What's very disappointing about this game is that you rarely use the potential of the character to fight the enemy; at times you find yourself alone for huge portions of the game jumping around the city performing as if this were a gymnastics game.
There is absolutely no freedom at all to explore any part of the city or stray from the script of the game. It becomes apparent very quickly when the only way to get through to each checkpoint is to follow the trail of your feline friend Midnight, which you can see with your cat sense. Be ready for countless hours of climbing walls, pole jumping, flips, swinging, and wait did I forget combat... ah it looks like the game designers also left that out as well.
Combat and action in the game is very limited, and at times when you feel like cat fighting your way through a couple foes that show up, you are left disappointed by the little action you do get. When you actually get the chance to get into a situation where you can use some of those cat-like acrobatic kicks and whip action, you find out that your goal is to kick and fight your way through, so that you can ultimately kick your opponent into a closet or a garbage bin. Not a very exciting way to get satisfaction out of kicking someone's butt, but even worse, you sometimes just have to keep fighting them until they get scared and run off, or until you can do a specific cat-move on them. It's a huge letdown because you have this ferocious Catwoman with a wide range of combat moves and even a whip, and you hardly get any use of them.
Environments in the game at first are very eye pleasing, and it's all very realistic, but over time it does get a bit redundant. During the game you also have to figure out some puzzles which seem to not really be much of a puzzle since every step of the game is pretty much scripted for you. If you can follow it exactly you can make it through just fine. Watch out though, if you get stuck at a point be ready to spend a lot of time figuring out where to go. At some points it gets so frustrating due to the difficult controls, bad camera angles, and control combinations that you might just have to take a break and come back later before you throw your Xbox out a window.
If you liked the movie and want to continue the fun, I would say pick this one up only if you are a diehard fan. It is eye pleasing at times but because it's very slow and lacks action. It can become very aggravating in a short amount of time. The time I spent playing Catwoman I think I would have more enjoyed a nice long catnap instead.
