Strategy games are pretty fun to get into, but sometimes you run into one that can be a bit too challenging for its own good, and while you're given the chance to really tax your brain, more amateur players might find themselves frustrated and wanting to play something a bit more puzzling, like, Tetris. Catan Online is a game that has its own structure, and may become something of a classic for some strategy players, but while its presentation is great, the gameplay takes a while to get into.

The game's built like this. Random maps are built into a diamond-like grid, with different pieces of land that are numbered and surrounded by smaller roads, also numbered. Your job is to place housing in different spots and begin to accumulate points by growing crops and rolling the dice to see where fate lands you, all while trying to outdo the opposition.

Catan Online has a very stylish look, that I admit. It seems to emulate old-school times, with graphics that are reminiscent of the days of King Arthur. The music is pretty sweet as well, complete with a good melody and instruments you aren't used to hearing in a game such as this. There are also plenty of modes to mess with, either the "short game" or the "standard" mode, so you can get your practice in. And, as stated, the game's online, so you can play against other players who have mad crop-growing skills.

Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into the game. As intriguing as the concept is, it just didn't latch onto me like it should have. Maybe it was just the general nature of dice rolling and having to keep control of an inventory while you're trying to build up ten points. Or maybe it was the fact that it seemed to be built for more advanced players. It's intriguing, but not all-out grasping.

Catan Online isn't a bad game, really, it's just one that takes a lot of patience and perseverance to get through. If you have heaps of both and don't mind delving into a thought-provoking game experience, this may be the game for you! Catan Online can be found for free trial and download at MSN Games.

Helpful Tip: Practice and patience makes perfect in a game like this, so be sure you have the time to really get the most out of your Catan Online experience!
