It's about time that Dracula X: Rondo of Blood got some love in the States. Fourteen years after its initial Japanese release, this long-lost Castlevania game gets its due with the release of The Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP. While this compilation lacks the depth of previous games in the series, it more than makes up for it with its old-school dedication and quality bonus content.

The plot is pure Castlevania. Dracula's back, wreaking havoc throughout the local town. A member of the Belmont family, whip in hand, is ready to stop him dead in his tracks. Hundreds of minions stand in the way, needing a reminder of what happens when evil messes with good. You know a drill -- smack the crap out of them with your weapons and save the day, if you can survive long enough.

Chronicles main highlight is the Rondo of Blood remake. This mode meshes well-designed 3-D visuals and classic 2-D gameplay with sweet results. The well-colored backdrops breathe life into the game, along with great animation (especially on larger enemies) and weapon effects. The action may get a little slow every now and then, but not enough to make this adventure a downer. Story sequences attempt to tie each of these segments together, but they don't look especially well done. Don't worry, though -- it's no big deal, as you can skip right past them.
