Today, Konami announced that it plans to release a new Castlevania video game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. Except instead of rolling out the same old adventure, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima teamed with MercurySteam Entertainment to reboot the franchise. The result is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, without question one of the most impressive looking games in the series.
First, forget everything you know about Castlevania, because Lords of Shadow bears little resemblance to its predecessors. This isn't some recycled 2-D adventure or one of those awful 3-D games on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Instead, it's an epic quest full of gorgeous environments, towering monsters and plenty of intense combat. In addition, Patrick Stewart plays an unannounced character. Hearing his voice instantly bumps up the game's street cred.
Although we don't have many details, you play as Gabriel, a hero searching for retribution, salvation and strange masks that supposedly resurrect the dead. Konami also implied that he lost someone close, perhaps a love interest, but we're not sure how everything ties together.
For now, all we have to go on are a few screens and the jaw-dropping teaser that showcases dramatic music, battles with werewolves in a forest, a humongous and scary castle and a fight against what appeared to be a rock monster, set within a snowy environment.
Unfortunately, that's about all we know. Gabriel kills enemies with a whip and lights them on fire, but that's it when it comes to gameplay details. For now, however, this game looks incredible and we can't wait to see what Kojima Productions and MercuryStream dream up.
