Rentrak has released its Home Video Essentials video game rental data for the 2008 calendar year. Rockstar's GTA IV, which broke entertainment sales records on launch day and during its first week, also was the most rented video game last year. This was followed by Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Microsoft's Halo 3.
Speaking of Microsoft, the top rentals were completely dominated by the Xbox 360, while there were no titles listed for the PS3. Xbox 360 increased its rental market share from 26.1 percent in 2007 to 36.8 percent in 2008, while consumer spending on Wii game rentals increased from 7.3 percent to 17.1 percent.
It's also interesting to note that in 2008, seven of the top 10 rentals were rated Mature, whereas in 2007 only four of the top 10 were rated Mature.
