Infinity Ward, the team behind the outstanding Call of Duty 4, found that the number of people who have pirated their latest effort on PC is an "astounding" amount.

As part of a blog post aptly titled "They Wonder Why People Don't Make PC Games Any More," Infinity Ward's Community Manager Robert Bowling commented on PC game piracy, and in particular some findings the developer made in regards to its hit title Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
"...we pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing Multiplayer (which was fantastic). What wasn't fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game on stolen / cracked CD keys of pirated copies (and that was only people playing online)," he said.
"Not sure if I can share the exact numbers or percentage of PC players with you, but I'll check and see; if I can I'll update with them. As the amount of people who pirate PC games is astounding. It blows me away at the amount of people willing to steal games (or anything) simply because it's not physical or it's on the safety of the internet to do."
Infinity Ward certainly is not the first developer to lament the sorry state of game piracy on the PC. id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead gave a passionate talk on the subject at last year's GDC. Billions of dollars are at stake, and ultimately formerly PC-only gamemakers are being forced to look to consoles for the real profits or to abandon PC development altogether.
