Despite selling just 60K copies during the May NPD reporting period, Boom Blox has met expectations and the marketing for the game is working, says EA chief John Riccitiello.

Last week we posted a story about the struggles that a number of third parties are still experiencing on the Wii. Of particular note was that the recently released game from Electronic Arts and Steven Spielberg, Boom Blox, managed to sell only 60K units, according to NPD data obtained by GameDaily BIZ.
EA never returned our request for comment, but CEO John Riccitiello apparently seems pleased with Boom Blox's performance so far. Speaking at a William Blair Investor Conference today, he said that the game has met internal expectations: "It's continued to sell well. It did break into the top 10 for the Wii, and the advertising is doing exactly what [our] team expected to: drive sales."
A number of analysts expected sales to be much higher than 60K and they've pointed to the marketing for the game perhaps not hitting the mark (despite Riccitiello's assertions to the contrary). Analysts at Pacific Crest Securities thought the game would sell around 250K, according to MTV Multiplayer.
Wedbush Morgan Securities' expectations were a bit more tempered. "I didn't expect much, but you must admit that the response was underwhelming," said analyst Michael Pachter. "They [EA] don't appear to know how to market to Wii owners; give them time and they'll figure it out. However, it's not as clear from the name what the game is about, at least not like [Take-Two's] Carnival Games, for example."
Thanks to Joystiq for the tip.
