On Monday, beleaguered publisher Midway revealed a massive third-quarter loss of $75.9 million and the company said that Chairman Shari Redstone resigned. Today the company confirmed that it's laid off a number of employees at its Chicago studio, best known for the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The news first broke on Kotaku, which said between 20 to 30 people were cut, although Midway would not confirm the exact number. A spokesperson for Midway later commented to Edge, "[The reduction] was well below 10 percent of the studio population, and many of those people were reassigned elsewhere in the company."
The layoffs at Midway Chicago come after the completion of Blitz: The League II and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. "As large projects are completed, it is expected for any multi-team studio to evaluate the appropriate staffing levels and team composition needed going forward," the spokesperson said.
Earlier this year, Midway also had layoffs at its Austin studio and shut down its Los Angeles studio.
