From the makers of Guilty Gear comes the oddly titled BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, a beautiful 2-D fighter with glorious 3-D backgrounds, all presented in high-definition. Everything about this brawler screams high quality, from the gorgeous character animation to the smooth fighting mechanics. It also features an eclectic mix of combatants, including a cute vampire that uses her pets as weapons, a bizarre cat girl and a blob comprised of insects. Whereas characters in other fighters usually have similar button combinations, the ones in BlazBlue have their own unique controls, allowing hardcore fans to learn each one's intricacies.
That said, the word hardcore works for and against the game. On one hand, BlazBlue features complex stories for each of its 12 fighters, magnificent art, special moves mapped to the right analog stick and lag-free online play with detailed stat tracking. If you love anime, this is an essential purchase. On the other hand, BlazBlue's narratives make little sense, characters talk over one another before fights, and a steep learning curve will frustrate many casual fighting fans hoping to button mash their way to victory. If you have the patience, though, BlazBlue comes highly recommended, especially since the special edition (the only version available) comes with a bonus strategy guide for newcomers.
