Ubisoft's is using the same technology that powers Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and the team that created the original game to bring Robert Zemeckis' new 3-D movie, Beowulf, to life.

Paramount Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment's film stars Ray Winstone in the title role and Anthony Hopkins as the corrupt King Hrothgar, as well as John Malkovich, Robin Wright Penn, Brendan Gleeson, Crispin Glover, Alison Lohman and Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother.

Adrian Lacey, the game manager for Ubisoft, showed off an early version of the Mature-rated game at an UbiDays event as some of the Shangri-La team looked on.

"The game explores man's temptation of what is right and wrong," said Lacey. "The story has Beowulf fighting his inner demons as well as enemies. Players can choose to be carnal or heroic and there are consequences for both. This game allows you to create your own legacy. You can be a heroic king or a monster slayer."

Beowulf's carnal side adds multiple dimensions of gameplay. In hand-to-hand combat, Beowulf can crush and tear enemies apart. Beowulf has the strength of 30 men and the camera perspective zooms in for this combat to show his brute strength up close and personal. Players are literally put in the heat of the action. While in this blind rage, you can accidentally kill your own men. These dead men will come back and haunt you throughout the game as shadows. Another detriment is that when you come out of a carnal rage, Beowulf is in a daze and susceptible to enemy attacks.

"Players start off as an arrogant single guy and work their way through the game, making decisions on how to fight," said Lacey. "If one chooses to be heroic, building up powers takes longer. However, to go carnal, one can dive into their full powers right away. Beowulf will age as the game goes on and his appearance will be affected by the decisions you make. The heroic Beowulf will look the part, while the monster slayer version will be scarred."

According to Lacey, the game offers about 15 hours of gameplay in play through, but since there are multiple paths and ways to play, replay is a viable option. Over the course of the story, Beowulf's kingdom will evolve from the dark ages to the time of Christ. Dynamic loading means the action never ends from the moment you turn on the game through the end. And the game offers dynamic options for everything from the way characters speak and react to the way you fight.
