EA's Battlefield games are fantastic, but it's time to put a different spin on the formula; time to get away from 1942, Vietnam, and the modern era and get futuristic. Thus, we have Battlefield 2142. E3 marks the first time that EA has shown the game to the press, and after getting our blood-stained hands on it (stained from warfare, or course), we're really digging the series' dramatic new direction.

Unfortunately, EA hasn't completely blown the doors off this title, as developers won't reveal too many details. In fact, it appears that only one game type is playable. Called Titan Mode, the object is to simultaneously defend your team's Titan (a gigantic warship) while taking the steps necessary to bring down the opposing side's Titan. To do this you must first take out the other side's missile silos. Once you've got those in your possession you'll fire several shots at the Titan, the goal being to destroy its shields. The game's HUD contains the shield energy level for both Titans on the top of the screen, so you can see exactly how much damage you're doing.

After obliterating the shields, the next step is to reach the Titan, either by flying yourself up there via jetpack or using one of the game's ships, or you can find an assault pod (located on an APC) and just super jump onto it. From there, it's all a matter of getting inside and destroying the internals.

While we don't know about all of the weapons in the game, there is an assortment of high-powered rifles, shotguns, pistols, and lasers. There's also plenty of flying and ground-based vehicles, in particular these gigantic mechs that come standard with gatling guns and missiles. They're a bit difficult to control, as they're clunky as all hell, but it's definitely fun stomping around and blowing shit up.

Another cool feature is the ability to customize your character. Battlefield 2142 features four classes (Recon, Assault, Engineer, and Support), and each one has different weapons and abilities (run really fast, carry lots of weapons). But you can also drag and drop different items onto your soldier. But we need to spend more time with the game to truly understand how all this works. However, we do know that there's a cloaking device, electrical grenades, and sentry guns.

There's still a lot more about this game that EA hasn't told us, but thus far, Battlefield 2142 is a fun FPS that should be a fine addition to the series.
