Just when it seemed like players had mastered taking down Titans in Battlefield 2142, out comes the first booster pack: Northern Strike. During the course of this futuristic battle, where factions fight over what little habitable land remains, the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC) manages to sneak into mainland Europe, where undefended resources can be found underneath the glacial ice. The PAC fortifies its position before the European Union (EU) responds. So, it becomes the EU's job to fight through the PAC's defensive positions and drive it back.
Northern Strike bumps up the action with three new maps. Soldiers use launch pods to assault a Titan docking harbour in Port Bavaria. Another map, entitled Bridge at Ramagen was once a scene of a major battle during WWII, and will now see fighting once again as both sides of the global conflict struggle to win control of the bridge. Lastly, the EU launches its final assault on a fortified city in Liberation of Leipzig.
Game play enhancements compliment the new maps, including Titan mode support on two of the maps; so players will bring down Titans for the first time in full urban environments. A mode called Conquest Assault Lines introduces new rules, where attackers need to capture all control points before breaching the main base. Additionally, personnel pods will be able to fire horizontally, allowing soldiers to traverse battlefields much faster.
Of course, the Booster Pack wouldn't be complete without new vehicles. The EU receives the Goliath, a gigantic, slow moving battle-firing platform. Not only do players use it for cover, but it also provides allies with health and ammunition. The PAC, on the other hand, receives the Hachimoto, a fast moving vehicle that hovers over the landscape. It becomes an efficient vehicle killer when manned by skilled gunners and a pilot.
In addition, soldiers fight across ruined cities and icy landscape, earning up to ten new unlocks and ten new awards.
Northern Strike should provide a fresh take on the Battlefield series for those that may have mastered 2142. Look for the game this summer.
