Batman: Arkham Asylum debuts on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 later this summer, but only PS3 owners will have the ability to play eight Challenge Maps as the Joker. These maps are unlocked throughout the core campaign mode of Arkham Asylum and require the player to make use of stealth and combat to defeat multiple rounds of baddies.

We played one of the maps as both Batman and Joker to feel the difference between the two characters. In the dungeon map, Batman fights Arkham prisoners while Joker fights prison guards. While Batman throws meaty punches and is able to tackle enemies from a further distance, Joker fights dirty, slapping guards around, stunning them with spray gas and shooting them from afar. The Joker feels more like a boxer to Batman's wrestler. In addition, building up the Joker's combo unlocks his special attack -- shocking a guard with a buzzer.

The Joker playable character will be a free download via the PlayStation Network available on the August 25 release date for the game. An Eidos representative neither confirmed nor denied that the download would later come to the Xbox 360 or PC.
