Unless you've been hiding in a cave for a few years, you already know that skateboarding has become extremely popular. Kids are constantly skating at local parks and schools, and you can actually watch skateboarding competitions on television. Of course, the world of video games was destined to follow suit, and follow they did, with many skating game offerings for all of the major consoles. Most notable have been the Tony Hawk games, named after professional skateboarder Tony Hawk. For kids who have not yet graduated to the Tony Hawk level, Atari has created Backyard Skateboarding, a kid-friendly skating game utilizing the Backyard characters that have become a staple in the world of kid's sports games. In Backyard Skateboarding, you can play as the Backyard kids, or as a kid-sized version of professional skater Andy MacDonald. The object of the game is to perform tricks and win major sponsorships, and eventually win the Backyard Ultimate Skate park.
Like all Backyard sports games, Backyard Skateboarding is made expressly for kids, and it therefore has adorable animation and easy controls. The action all takes place in colorful environments like the Backyard neighborhood and the boardwalk, and the kids look cute and fun. There are lots of unlockable tricks and moves that can be won, and the final prize is the unlockable Backyard Ultimate Skate park. Kids of any age will enjoy this game, and it sets a nice background for older sports games in the future.
