A couple weeks ago French publisher Infogrames reported its own first quarter fiscal results, revealing a 91 percent rise in sales, which was driven in large part by a "strong recovery" of the U.S. business (i.e. Infogrames' subsidiary Atari). Today, Atari announced its own fiscal results, and Infogrames wasn't kidding: Atari posted a profit of $3.5 million for the quarter, a vast improvement from the net loss of $11.9 million during the same period last year.

Sales for the first quarter also increased significantly, jumping from $10.4 million to $40.3 million. Publishing net revenue grew from $9.7 million to $36.7 million and distribution revenue was $3.6 million, up from $0.7 million a year earlier.

Atari's Alone in the Dark, which Infogrames said in its announcement shipped 1.2 million copies in the quarter, was a major contributor to Atari's turnaround.
