Recently, Nintendo provided us the opportunity to sit down with a member of its localization team up in Redmond, Washington to discuss the forthcoming release of Advance Wars 2: Days of Ruin. The game is due to ship next week and has many features that are worth looking forward to, that is, according to associate localization producer Tim O'Leary.

The first question we asked Tim regarded the story's darker tone. Tim explained, "This isn't just another entry in the Advance Wars series. Natural disasters have destroyed ninety percent of the planet's population, leaving ten percent to fight for survival."

Remaining survivors on the planet are divided into two camps. The first, the one you'll take control of initially, features a spry young soldier named Will. He's a survivor, and the last of his kind from the local military school. He joins forces with two fellow drifters, Brenner and Lynn, in an attempt to rebuild humanity. Meanwhile, the opposing camp, led by a treacherous soldier calling himself The Beast, wants to claim all the natural resources remaining on the planet.

Advance Wars' story also ties in a feud between two countries that escalated before the devastation began. "The two main nations are Rubinette and Lazuria, and they've been at each other's throats for decades," said Tim. No doubt they're still fighting, even with the ongoing disasters changing the course of history. He also explained that the game will be much more emotional than before, drawing on realistic character designs rather than the manga-inspired figures seen in previous entries.
